What is Hypnosis?
Essentially, hypnosis is just entering a very relaxed state, similar to day dreaming, guided by the Hypnotherapist. This profound state of relaxation helps the unconscious mind to accept more deeply beneficial suggestions made to it. Modern scanning techniques show activity taking place in the brain: people are not gullible, foolish or easily led: hypnosis is a physiological fact – something happens. |
| In a hypnosis session the patient may be ‘with me’ throughout, hearing every word I say, and feel “nothing has happened – I haven’t been hypnotised”. Another scenario is that she realises that instead of listening to me, she has been thinking about shopping, cooking or anything else that has come into her mind. The third experience is that she realizes that she has missed something of what I have said, and won’t be sure if it was two words or two thousand. She feels wonderfully relaxed and is in a very pleasant state, something like waking from a wonderful dream, yet not being able to recall what it was. I have also seen women who to all intents and purposes are fast asleep. Whatever experience the patient has, it appears to make little difference to the efficacy of the therapy. |

There is NEVER any possibility of the Hypnotherapist having power over you in any way. Nor is Hypnosis like a general anaesthetic – you will be fully conscious throughout the session.
For Hypnosis for Childbirth, I use a number of techniques that women can utilise in labour. The woman is trained during pregnancy so that she can ‘do it herself’ - perhaps with some help from her birth partner: this enhances her feelings of control in labour.
The woman has a ‘tool box’ of techniques to use during labour.
The husbands and partners of women using hypnosis in labour enjoy being able to do something positive during labour, to help the woman achieve deep levels of hypnosis. This contrasts strongly with the normal feeling of helplessness that men often experience during childbirth.
For childbirth, Hypnosis is the perfect method of pain management, as it is in the woman’s control, is non-invasive, has no effect on the baby and actually improves birth outcomes. |
